The Early Music Shop and London Recorder Centre house the largest selection of wooden recorders, plastic recorders and recorder accessories to be found anywhere. The staff have a thorough knowledge of the range of instruments available and have many years of experience in offering advice on any recorder related matter.

What is included
All recorders sold from either The Early Music Shop or London Recorder Centre come with cases or carrying bags, and we include fingering charts, cork grease, pull throughs (or mops), cleaning material, and maintenance sets (where applicable). The maintenance sets consist of recorder oil, anti-condensant, oil brush, small paint brush and 'playing in & maintenance' instructions. All recorders come with at least a 1 year warranty, many recorder makers offer a 2 or even 3 year guarantee.

In-House Repairs and service
The Early Music Shop in Saltaire also has an appointed in-house technician, Barry Holder, who was professionally trained by Moeck in Celle, and has had over 25 years experience in all aspects of recorder repairs, servicing and maintenance. We handle all makes of recorder. Our after sales services, from both Bradford and London, are provided to the highest of standards.

Choice
Whilst there are familiar instruments amongst these pages, many long established firms are continuing to develop new instruments and we are pleased to include their new designs here for the first time. We pride ourselves on being able to offer the most comprehensive range of wooden recorders, plastic recorders and accessories anywhere in the UK.

Our ‘On Approval’ Recorder Service
Both The Early Music Shop and London Recorder Centre can send 3-4 recorders anywhere in the UK or in the EU for a 10 day ‘trial’ period. This allows customers to show the instruments to teachers or try them out in consort before making a decision. Either make your own choice from the catalogue or contact us for recommendations. Our staff are on hand to offer helpful and knowledgeable advice.

Guarantee
All new recorders bought through either The Early Music Shop or London Recorder Centre are covered without exception with a 1 year guarantee. Some guarantees are now 2 or even 3 year
s.

Sheet Music & CDs
Both The Early Music Shop and London Recorder Centre house a comprehensive sheet music and CD department. Specialist titles, facsimile, tutor books, methods and educational material all available. Contact staff for further details.

Choosing a recorder
Choice is very much a personal decision but as a guide you should bare in mind the following:
• Try to choose an instrument appropriate to the period of music you are playing.
• Decide whether you want the recorder predominantly for solo or ensemble work.
• Determine an upper price limit and choose from a wide selection.

Take it away
Both The Early Music Shop and London Recorder Centre operate the new Arts Council funded 'Take it away' scheme which allows a customer to purchase an instrument between £100 - £2000 and to pay it back over a 10 month interest free period! An initial deposit is follows by 9 equal monthly payments, interest free.. This scheme is available both to customers in the shop and to mail order customers. Throughout this part of the catalogue the terms Soprano and Alto are used in place of descant and treble.


Wooden recorders
Most of the surviving 17th and 18th century recorders are made from boxwood but modern makers use many different woods. To help with your choice, the table below shows some of the most popular woods used, their respective place of origin, density and tonal characteristics.

Maple - European, hard, fine grained, porous and resilient.
Specific density approx. 0.63. Soft fundamental tone.

 

Pearwood - European, hard, of very even density and fine texture.
Specific density approx 0.65. Soft fundamental tone.

 

Plumwood - European, particularly dense and heavy.
Specific density approx 0.80. Soft fundamental tone.

 

European boxwood - Traditional boxwood, dense and hard.
Specific density 0.91. Brilliant, full, round tone.

 

Maracaibo boxwood Venezuela, even grain and density.
Specific density 0.80. Full, round tone.

 

Olivewood - East African. Dense, attractively marked wood with marbled appearance.
Specific density 0.89. Full, rich tone.

 

Palisander -(Brazilian rosewood) A naturally oily wood of even density.
Specific density 0.88. Excellent full, round tone.

 

Rosewood - Honduras. Hard, heavy attractive grain.
Specific density approx. 1.05. Rich in overtones.

 

Grenadilla - (African blackwood). Very hard and extremely dense.
Specific density approx 1.2. Bright, rich sound.

 

 

Recorder repair service
Our experienced recorder technician is based at the workshops in Bradford and is able to 'doctor' most recorders and offer advice on recorder problems:
• Intonation & response
• Joints re-corking
• Thumbhole bushing
• Key, pads or spring replacements
• Crack repairs
• Replacement parts
Repairs normally take between 2 to 3 weeks to turn around (from posting to receiving back). Special arrangements can sometimes be made for personal callers.
