The
rebec came from the Arabian 'rabob' and its origins date back to 10th century
Europe. The body was carved from a single block of wood, and there was usually
no soundpost. As with most early instruments they came in many sizes and pitches
but the three stringed soprano rebec seems to have been the most popular. The
rebec is played by resting on one's shoulder, across the chest or in the armpit.
Rebecs are associated with secular instrumental music and have a thin nasal,
penetrating tone.
